Hitting the Paywall

Hitting The Paywall

In Budget Week Queensland's The Courier Mail  Has Put Up Its' Paywall

The Big Switch - Alternative Queensland News Sites

QUEENSLAND, Budget Week: As the second austere budget of the Newman Government was being handed down, The Courier Mail was putting up it's long planned paywall as part of the News Limited Murdocharcy suite.

For the most part, since the Newman Government came to power, the paper has kept up a steady level of reporting and investigative journalism such as in the Scott Driscoll MP case.
Hitting The Paywall We're Sorry To See You Go
The paper also seemed somewhat shielded from the usual rhetoric launched at the media bias of News Limited.

Also in this week, news broke that Queensland electricity bills for households would rise by 22.6% and business by 17%. The paper, in partnership with Channel 7, launched a campaign called The Big Switch to get readers to sign up to push for a better deal.  In hindsight, this seems a little disingenuous.

Given that the Queensland Government budget introduced $1b worth of debt to households in the form of a new levy and increased insurance stamp duty, it was a very poorly timed decision by CM.

The price of a cup of coffee, is the usual selling point I hear. A few dollars a week. A few dollars more over at Financial Review, The Australian & Crikey.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

The paywall works by first inviting you to sign in with your social media account or creating a brand new News Ltd one.  This allows you to browse around for a while. After about ten articles or so you are then presented with an ad to purchase a subscription.

Would you like fries with that? Yes or Yes.

I'm not suggesting that the paper will fail or will turn off its paywall. I think it will now appeal to a different audience, perhaps more akin to Fin Review readers.

My twitter followers are my customers. They tell me they don't want to pay for Murdoch news so I respect that.

I have ceased tweeting links to The Courier Mail site.

So if you don't want to pay for online news, what are the alternatives for readers?

There's a growing list of Queensland based news sites and also Australian sites that run Queensland stories. I wont critique them all. I think I'll leave that up to you.

Qld Gov Media Statements You can also view Qld Government media statements online. However, they are always biased toward the government of the day.

Let me know, @Qldaah.
